What is RTLS?

RTLS stands for Real-Time Location System. It is a technology used to track and locate assets, objects, or people in real-time within a specific environment. RTLS relies on various techniques and technologies to provide accurate and up-to-date location information. The primary goal of RTLS is to enable businesses and organizations to monitor and manage their assets, improve operational efficiency, enhance safety, and optimize processes.

RTLS typically uses a combination of hardware and software components, including:

Tags or Beacons: These are small devices attached to assets, objects, or carried by people. They emit signals that can be detected by the RTLS system.

Readers or Scanners: These are the receivers that pick-up signals from the tags or beacons. They are strategically placed throughout the environment to cover the tracking area.

Wireless Technologies: RTLS systems often use wireless technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Wi-Fi, Ultra-Wideband (UWB), RFID, or Zigbee to transmit signals between tags and readers.

Software Platform: The data collected by the readers is processed and managed by a software platform. The platform calculates the locations of the tags and provides real-time tracking and visualization.

Data Processing Algorithms: Sophisticated algorithms are used to analyze the received signals, calculate distances, and determine the location of the tags accurately.

RTLS finds applications in various industries, including healthcare (tracking medical equipment and patients), manufacturing (managing inventory and assets), logistics and supply chain (tracking goods and shipments), and security (monitoring personnel and access control), among others. The real-time nature of the system allows organizations to make informed decisions quickly and efficiently based on the location data provided by the RTLS.

How does the Sentrax BLE system work?
  • Is the Sentrax BLE technology predicated on either,
  • relative location based on last BLE beacon heard, and we maintain a dictionary of the UUID/MAC of a BLE beacon mapped to a location zone?
  • or, trilateration on a 2D plane over BLE radio?

By using the relative proximity of the last heard BLE beacon, the gateway can determine the distance or strength of the signal between itself and the beacon. This information allows the gateway to infer the proximity of the beacon and estimate the location of the beacon or device being tracked. It’s important to note that proximity detection in this context refers to determining the relative distance or proximity to a specific BLE tag.

  • What is the difference between the “Sentrax Angle-of-Arrival” compared to the “Sentrax RTLS” solution?
  • Which of the Sentrax solutions above is currently integrated into MobiCall?

Both systems fall under the umbrella of RTLS and the difference between Sentrax’s Angle of Arrival systems is based on AoA technology, Our ZENIX LON-2 is a BLE AoA Scanner, and a single locator is equipped with multiple antennae and does the calculates the Azimuth, elevation, and RSSI of the signal received and estimates the location of the tag using triangulation method.

The AoA system has sub meter accuracy. On the other hand, Sentrax’s ZENIX LEN-2 is Standard BLE locator and uses proximity to detect the tags which are present within its range. It also tells the location of a badge/tag present within the building. It has an accuracy of 2-5 meters.

What is locator/scanner, or gateway?

A locator/scanner or gateway, in the context of BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) technology and location tracking systems, is a device responsible for detecting and collecting signals from BLE tags or beacons within its range. It serves as a communication hub between the tags/beacons and the central system.

Here’s a brief explanation of each:

Locator/Scanner: A locator or scanner is a device that actively scans its surrounding environment for Bluetooth signals emitted by BLE tags or beacons. When a locator detects the signal from a nearby tag or beacon, it reads the transmitted data, such as unique identifiers (UID) or telemetry data, and processes this information. The locator is equipped with algorithms to calculate the proximity and location of the tags based on the received signal strength, time of arrival, and other factors. The calculated location data is then sent to the central server or software platform for further processing and visualization.

Gateway: The term “gateway” is sometimes used interchangeably with “locator/scanner” in the context of BLE-based location tracking systems. A gateway performs similar functions to a locator/scanner. It acts as an intermediate device that bridges the communication between the BLE tags/beacons and the central system. The gateway scans for BLE signals, gathers data from the tags/beacons, and forwards this data to the cloud-based platform or server for real-time tracking and monitoring.

Both locators/scanners and gateways play a crucial role in real-time location systems (RTLS) that utilize BLE technology. They enable the tracking and monitoring of assets, personnel, or objects equipped with BLE tags within a specific area or environment. These devices help provide accurate location information, improve asset visibility, enhance operational efficiency, and support various applications in industries such as healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, and retail.

How does Sentrax work with BLE and scanners? and share some use cases

Sentrax utilizes BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) technology in combination with BLE scanners to create real-time location tracking and monitoring solutions. Here’s an overview of how Sentrax works with BLE and scanners:

BLE Tags and Beacons: Sentrax offers BLE tags (also known as asset tags or badge tags) that can be attached to assets, objects, or personnel. These tags periodically transmit Bluetooth signals containing unique identifiers (UID) and telemetry data, such as battery level and sensor readings. Additionally, Sentrax provides BLE beacons that serve as stationary reference points within the tracking area, broadcasting BLE signals at regular intervals.

BLE Scanners: Sentrax BLE scanners are strategically placed throughout the environment to scan and detect signals from the BLE tags and beacons. When a scanner picks up a signal from a nearby tag or beacon, it reads the transmitted data, including the unique identifier and other information.

Location Calculation: The scanners use various algorithms, such as triangulation or trilateration, along with signal strength and time of arrival data, to calculate the location of the BLE tags within the coverage area. By comparing the received signals from multiple scanners, Sentrax can achieve high accuracy in determining the location of the tags in real-time.

Cloud-Based Platform: The location data and other relevant information collected by the scanners are sent to Sentrax’s cloud-based platform, known as Solix. This platform processes and manages the data, providing real-time tracking, monitoring, and analytics capabilities to end-users.

User Interface and Integration: Sentrax offers user-friendly interfaces, mobile applications, and APIs that enable seamless integration of location data into various applications, including mobile apps, ERP systems, and other client servers. This integration extends the functionality of the system and allows users to leverage location data for specific use cases.

Some Use Cases of Sentrax BLE and Scanners:

Asset Tracking: In industries like logistics and manufacturing, Sentrax’s BLE technology can be used to track the location of assets, such as containers, pallets, and equipment, in real-time. This ensures efficient asset management, reduces loss, and improves inventory control.

Personnel Tracking: In healthcare or industrial settings, Sentrax’s BLE solutions can monitor the movements of personnel, ensuring safety and optimizing workflows. This can be particularly valuable in emergency situations or critical environments.
